Gemini citations versus Google AI Overviews
A citation from the Gemini model and a link inside a Google AI Overview come from two different systems. Gemini is a model you can query directly. An AI Overview is a feature inside Google Search, subject to Search indexing and Search ranking. Being cited by one says nothing about the other, so a report that combines them into a single Google score is measuring a surface that does not exist.

Two surfaces, two retrieval paths
The practical difference is that Search fundamentals apply to one and not directly to the other. A page excluded from Search cannot appear in an AI Overview at all, whatever a model might say about it.
- Gemini. A model queried directly. Its returned sources come from its own retrieval.
- Google AI Overview. A Search feature. What it can link to is bounded by what Google Search has indexed and considers relevant for that query.
Why they must be reported separately
If the two are averaged, a change in either one moves the combined number and you cannot tell which. Since the corrective action differs, the combined figure is not just imprecise, it is unusable: an AI Overview absence points at Search indexing and relevance, while a Gemini absence points at retrieval and corroboration.
An AI Overview also does not appear for every query, and its absence is a property of the query rather than of the site. That state has to be recorded as unmeasured rather than as a miss.
How GetSounding keeps them apart
Gemini is one of the five services checked on paid plans and is reported under its own model label. Google AI Overview checks are recorded separately on paid plans when Google returns usable evidence for the tested question, and are never merged into the Gemini result.
What this page does not establish
- AI Overview availability varies by query, market and time. A run that returns no overview is not a negative result.
- Model versions change. A result is evidence about the model label recorded with it and nothing more.
